Define Your Personal Branding Trademarks. Today as I walked to work this morning, I felt very Nicole, which ultimately made me excited to take on the day.   Im  attending a young leaders of Chicago event with my mentor tonight, and I want to reflect my personal brand to each person I meet.   Im wearing a fabulous knee-length suit coat from Nordstrom  in my signature power color: pink.   My hair is thick, teased and  huge, and  Im rocking my signature beehive look-aka known as the bump.   My eyeliner is  slightly cat-eyed.   These three things (pink, big hair, and big eye makeup) are my personal branding/style trademarks.   What  are YOUR personal branding trademarks?   You may think you dont have  any, but  I assure you- you do.   For example, my best friend Katie is one of the few girls who can ALWAYS look hot in polka dots and pearls.   My sister Ashley can rock clothes from a thrift store that cost less than $1 and make them look like a million bucks.   One of my  other girlfriends ALWAYS wears black and white, and it looks amazing and classy on her.    If I see an awesome sweater or a pair of clogs, I think of my Mom.   When I think of Nicole Richie, I think of her beautiful Balenciaga Motorcycle bags. What part of your look or wardrobe brands YOU?   What makes people pick you out of a crowd?   As I mentioned in last weeks article, Networking 101, I think it is really important to wear something memorable when attending a business or networking event.   Keep it professional, but dont blend in among a sea of boring- dont be afraid to be YOU.   The founder of Ladies Who Launch, Victoria Colligan,  would agree with me.   She says that it isnt until you start being your self and stop worrying about emulating other successful women, that you start to succeed.   Read the short story here. Today I sent out a Tweet asking what other girls felt like defined their personal brand.   I got some cool responses, along with one DM from a girl who said: How do you come up with a signature personal brand trademark? Id love to have one but I have no clue where to start! Well think again!   Here are some examples.   I bet you already have a brand. Your glasses.   (Think Sarah Palin!) Anna Nicole Smith.   Need I say more? Curly hair. Pretty  eyes. Always being the girl with cool shoes. Hair Color/Style. Pearls. Very white teeth. Always wearing lipstick. Your laugh. A cool short hair cut. Brand loyalty. Bows, polka dots, plaid- whatever pattern you love and wear often. Always having your nails done. Your curves. (Um hello Oprah and Beyonce!) Your signature jewelry piece (mine is my David Yurman bracelet) Your smile. Marilyn Monroe. Your makeup. Your ability to coordinate. So please share: what are your personal branding trademarks??

How to Find Your Dream Career in a Demanding Economy Whether you know exactly what you want to do already, or you feel clueless as to what to do next in your career, the economy is more demanding than ever in terms of jobs available, skills required, experience needed, and salary expectations. If you feel as though finding a job is like looking for gold in a minefield, then please know that you’re not alone. It’s a tough market out there and many candidates are having to change their approach slightly and lessen their expectations somewhat, to get to where they want to be. Decades ago, you would have found a job after university (or school, if you didn’t go to university) and be set for life. There was less encouragement to try out different roles until you found the one for you; you needed stability, and work was more of a means to an end. Nowadays, life is more about balance â€" or at least, we’re trying â€" and most people want to go to work each day to do a job they love. Here are some tips to help you find the job of your dreams while the pressures of the economy linger on. Don’t run before you can walk It might sound ridiculously simple, but the pressure to find a job after university can feel extremely overwhelming and push you to run for that dream job. But what about walking towards it instead and keeping a look-out along the way? Taking a temporary or casual job initially isn’t a bad idea at all, if it helps to give you time to decide on your long-term goals. If you can afford to wait it out perhaps by moving back to your parents you could even choose to undertake some intern or work experience placements to help you discover your passions. These types of roles will look great on your CV too, as they will show your commitment to your career as well as your motivation to develop personally and professionally. You never know what opportunities might come your way from it! Internships are worthwhile We touched on this above, but it’s very true that internships can be a fantastic foot in the door for many candidates. Many interns go on to be offered a permanent role in a company, as it’s usually a good opportunity for a company to see how you fit in and what you might be able to bring to the role. It’s a chance for you to show them what you’ve got. If your sights are set on a full-time, well-paid position and you’re not having much luck finding the right job, don’t be ashamed to lower your expectations and consider placement work. There are plenty of people who’ve found success from such opportunities and would highly recommend them to you. Make realistic decisions Pressures and expectations can cause you to follow the crowd and make decisions based on what others are doing. What’s important to remember, is that any decision you make should be right for you and your position in that moment. If you’re not ready to take a bold move, then don’t feel like you must. Are you living at home but desperate to move out and willing to take any job that comes your way? Remember that any situation is temporary and a little while longer won’t hurt. If you’re being rejected for jobs because you’re aiming too high, don’t be afraid of applying for more junior roles as there could be development opportunities in the future. Whatever your situation, make the decision that’s right for you â€" regardless of what others are doing around you. Money shouldn’t be your ultimate goal Of course, we all want to earn enough money to live a comfortable life. But when you start to strive for more and more you lose sight of what really matters to you. What should matter to you is that you are healthy, you have the support of and give support to your family, you have a roof over your head, and you have food on the table each day. We often consider more money as the way to a better and happier life, but the reality is that when you start to earn more you increase your lifestyle choices to match â€" yet the fundamentals of your life remain the same. If you find yourself wanting to earn big bucks to live the lifestyle you dream of, try to bring yourself back to what’s truly important to you and choose a job based on the role that’s on offer and how much satisfaction it will bring you. You’re going to spend around 40 hours a week doing that job, so you want to ensure you’re going to wake up every morning excited to go to work! How to be Confident in your Job Search - Wolfgang Career Executive Coaching Many of my clients struggle with how to be confident in their job search. After all, a job search can be very challenging because of the reason people are searching. For example: due to a terrible work experience at their current company after a break from the workforce after a layoff seeking fulfillment There are many more scenarios, but one thing that plagues many individuals in a career search is how to be confident. Questions from your inner critic can ring in your head: Am I good enough? Will anyone hire me? Are my skills relevant? What if there are other with better skills, better experience, younger, up on the latest technology? Sound familiar? If so, you may be wondering how to be confident in your job search. How to be confident in your job search When I work with my career development clients through a job search, we look at things that are out of their control and touch on how to mitigate those factors. However, most of our time is focused on what the individual can control. As with all the work I do with clients, we also focus on both the ‘being’ side â€" who you are and the on the ‘doing’ side â€" the action side. There are many ways to increase your confidence in a job search and I’ve listed five below. The first 3 are doing and the last 2 are on the being side of the equation. 1. Identify what is in your control Ask yourself the question: What is in your control? Make a list. It might be your branding message on your resume or LinkedIn. It might be your messages to your network. It might be a certification you want to achieve. This list will give you tangible things to work on. 2. Remember your unique selling point We all have a unique selling point â€" something we bring to the table that others don’t. This might be a skill or a personality trait or an experience. The unique selling point might be different depending on the job, or it might be one that transcends several job openings. Identify it and own it. 3. Practice hard questions Practice the questions you don’t want to be asked in the interview. We all have them. The questions we hope they don’t ask. If you avoid addressing those questions, it can lead to anxiety. Get them out in the open. List them out. Then walk through them. Think about how you would like to address them. If you aren’t asked those questions, wonderful! However, you will build your confidence as you know you are prepared. 4. Get in the right frame of mind Before an interview, how do you get yourself into the right space in your mind? For some, it might be a quick meditation. For others, it might be a picture or image you can look at before your interview to get to that strong, confident space. Some individuals are auditory and benefit from a pump up song. I still remember the song being played before my first half-marathon. I was so scared of that race, but that song continues to be an inspirational song for me today. 5. Quiet your Inner Critic The inner critic, that voice in your head who likes to tell us that we are not good enough or worthy enough for a new opportunity, gets louder as we try new things. That voice your head is a manifestation of your safety instinct and will always be with you. However, you have a choice. You can listen and internalize that voice or you can hear the voice and not take direction from it. There are many steps for how to be confident in your job search. You will not go from feeling a lack of confidence to feeling extremely confident in one step. It takes time. Look at the list and see which ideas resonate with you. Start taking small steps. You will be surprised how quickly your confidence can build!
